So, as we all know, the Golden Rule goes, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". I think its more than just a nice thing to teach the kids, and it goes much deeper than most of us realize. Subconcsiously, we probably reword it to say "do unto others as you would have them do unto you - so they will do the same". When we apply it this way it becomes self-centered, which is totally off the mark. Doing good towards others when you have nothing to gain from it (or even to those who do you wrong) is right on target.
Paul mentions this in one other place, Romans 13: 8-10. He says, "he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law." Then he goes on to list the ten commandments and says that they are all summed up in one commandment - "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
"Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." Think about that. If love towards others was made perfect in us, naturally we wouldn't kill. We wouldn't bear false witness, and so forth.
